Jason Day’s ball got stuck in a tree during the second round of the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla.
Per the Rules of Golf, when a ball gets stuck in a tree, a player has to be able to identify their ball in order to be allowed to declare an unplayable lie and get relief. Otherwise, a golfer has to go back to where they played their last shot and hit again with a one-stroke penalty. So there’s value in being able to borrow a pair of binoculars from a rules official to see if they can find their ball and identify it for certain. Day did and was able to get an unplayable lie with a one-stroke penalty instead of a stroke-and-distance penalty.
He also created a delightful meme in the process.
